چکیده

Bleeding from duodenal varices is a rare complication of portal hypertension, occurring in only 0.4% of these patients and is often life-threatening because of the difficulty in diagnosis and treatment. Treatment options include surgical procedures and endoscopic and endovascular treatments. A 48-year-old female cirrhotic patient was admitted to our clinic with upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding. Endoscopic examination revealed nonbleeding Lm, Cb, RC (+), F3-F3-F2 esophageal and nodular-bleeding-oozing duodenal varices. Esophageal varices were eradicated with band ligation at two sessions. After one session of 2% polydocanol sclerotheraphy, no signs of bleeding were determined. Complete eradication was achieved after five sessions and 1 year apart from the initial treatment duodenal varices were eradicated. Although duodenal varices are rare, they are frequently fatal. There are limited data regarding optimal treatment. Successful treatment depends both on patient factors (hepatic synthetic function, comorbidities, size/location of the varices) and center expertise. Long-term eradication is variable and may depend on the cause and extensiveness of the ectopic varices. How to cite this article Temel T, Aktas A, Ozgenel SM, Özakyol A. Does sclerotherapy of remnant little oesophageal varices after endoscopic ligation have impact on the reduction of recurrent varices? Prospective study.

INTRODUCTION Endoscopic band ligation (EBL) is superior to endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) of oesophageal varices, however, EBL is associated with a higher rate of variceal recurrences. OBJECTIVE To examine whether the reduction of recurrent varices can be achieved by additional sclerotherapy of remnant little varices after ligation. METHODS Forty-eight patients with liver cirrhosi...

Efficacy of absolute alcohol injection compared with band ligation in the eradication of esophageal varices.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic sclerotherapy is an absolute indication for treating esophageal varices. Re-bleeding is common during the treatment period, before all varices become eradicated. AIM To compare two techniques of endoscopic esophageal varices eradication: sclerotherapy with absolute alcohol and banding ligation. PATIENTS AND METHOD Forty-six patients with liver cirrhosis and esophageal ...

Evaluation of endoscopic secondary prophylaxis in children and adolescents with esophageal varices.

BACKGROUND - Bleeding of esophageal varices is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in children and adults with portal hypertension and there are few studies involving secondary prophylaxis in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE - To evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic secondary prophylaxis in prevention of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in children and adolescents with esophageal varic...

Endoscopic sclerotherapy using absolute alcohol.

To assess the efficacy of absolute alcohol as a sclerosant, endoscopic sclerotherapy was carried out using a conventional endoscope and an indigenously designed injector. Forty three patients with portal hypertension who had presented with history of variceal bleeding were included in the study. Portal hypertension was caused by cirrhosis in 30 (69.8%), non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis in eight (1...

Sclerosing Therapy of Esophageal Varices

SUMMARY Bleeding of esophageal varices have a high mortality rate, and medical management is usualy unsuccessful. Surgical methods such as vascular ligation or shunting are expensive. High risk procedures with high mortality. Endoscopic sclerotherapy was applied in 104 patients with acute bleeding of esophageal varices during a period of 5 years in a prospettive and retrospective study. Th...
